Day 16 Easter Island

Today was an amazing day made possible by our Captain Olav Van Der Waard and his incredible Officers and crew. We arrived at out anchorage early this morning and the swells were quite large which led to huge waves crashing ashore right where we would have to tender. The Captain determined that it was unsafe to perform tender operations and instead of giving up he sailed to a location on the north shore of Easter Island and worked on a tender solution. He and the crew performed a minor miracle by designing a docking solution for tendering at the alternate location. Great job!!! He certainly made everyone’s day. I went ashore n the first tender with my new friends Ed & Becky and their rental car was waiting at the new location once we got ashore. Then it was off and running. We explored most of Easter Island in about 7 hours. We saw the amazing Ahus and Moais, fabulous coastlines and great scenery. We had just about a perfect day…. I absolutely love Easter Island….. Thanks Captain!!!

Fabulous! You have just added another place to my bucket list! Departing tomorrow for Galapagos!
One of those pictures reminds me of a Cingular commercial- or us it ATT? More bars in more places!

Jeff,

Entertaining and educational. By the way, some of the moais are as laid back and tanned as you, but not nearly as well traveled.

I can't believe you can walk right up to the maoi statues. I wonder how many more years they will let that happen before it turns out like everything in Italy and Greece with barriers around it and new plaster filling in the holes (which is so, so sad)...

Still checking in on you every day, just keeping my comments to myself. :)

What a sight! No wonder you were/are like a kid in a candy store on this island! It almost doesn't seem real. Thanks for the always fabulous photos and for sharing your journey with us. You're a gem and a true asset to HAL to spend the kind of time and money you do to maintain this on a daily basis. Also fantastic effort by Captain Olav to get you to this amazing port! I'm sure others in a similar situation would not have been so determined.
